The Unknown Conservative

A real life Republican pays us a visit to tell us why we should vote for Romney. Plus Jimmy Dore, Kevin Rooney and Stephane Zamorano.

This guy is a great example of why conservatives should never be elected to office.

This guy confidently asserting a steady stream of wrong information for an hour must be some kind of thought experiment?

I listened to this for twenty minutes and then fast-forwarded through the rest.

It’s the same old BS, you’re wasting your time talking politics with a guy like this (I’m assuming he’s your friend).
I used to listen to Al Franken’s show on Air America. He would have one of his old friends, who was a Republican, on for a segment every week. Al would then play a clip showing him how Rush Limbaugh again and again told huge lies on his show that week, which Al then easily debunked. Franken’s friend never stopped listening to Limbaugh even though he had no comeback to any of the takedowns.

A great example of cultural relativism in play. Perhaps you could resume the Locke/Hobbes discussion with “unknown”.

….and, “liberals want equality vs conservatives want freedom” is about as absurd a piece of reductionism one could imagine, right up there with Plato’s featherless biped. But “freedom” is the apple pie of the “conservative’s” anthem. And humanism, where would our conservative put it?

I listen to your podcasts as soon as they come out, and this is one of the ones that I enjoyed the most (from a purely political perspective) because of the give and take discourse you two had. Years ago I too used to be a Republican, and can remember having a lot of the same philosophy regarding government and society. But I changed – mainly it came from living in Europe and seeing how stunted the American way of life is in relation to how society can function. Plus, there was an “empathy” gap in my political landscape before.

Keep up the great work, David. I love your (and Jimmy Dore’s) show – and miss Frank Conniff.

    Gros bisous from Paris

I’m enjoying this episode. Jim Hightower debunks the postal service business quite eloquently in his inimitable (as J.Dore would say) style. Here’s a link http://www.hightowerlowdown.org/node/2927

RE: soc sec. Remove the cap on withholding or income and everybody pays a smaller percentage and the rich would pay enough so that we all can retire comfortably.

ProCon.org assembled a list of 13 different peer-reviewed studies which conclude that liberals and conservatives might not just have different talking points, they actually have different brains.

Each of the studies examined different elements of dissimilarity between liberals and conservatives and had interesting results.

Democrats, it seems, have a greater tolerance for uncertainty have because of their larger anterior cingulate cortexes, and Republicans are more sensitive to fear, because of their larger right amygdalas.

Psychiatrist Greg Appelbaum also found that conservatives are more likely to avoid individual self-harm, while liberals are more likely to avoid collective group harm.

The researchers said it was important to keep in mind that it might not be that a person’s predisposition to certain neurological markers leads to their political affiliation and in fact, it may be a “chicken or the egg issue”, where a person’s political affiliation can actually change their physiological traits.
